There have been instances where people, who are concerned about problems associated with drunkenness in their community, have rallied together to do something about it. A ground swell from the community can send a powerful message to key decision makers that there is a problem and action is required.

Ways to take action
- Join your Local Drug Action Group (LDAG) and work with fellow community members to make a difference
- Contact your local council to find out what they are doing to tackle alcohol related harm in your area
- Be a good host and neighbour- Look after your guests and inform neighbours of parties
- Increase your understanding of environments that may provide alcohol and ways to decrease drunkenness (see side menu)
Why should I take action?
By stepping forward and having your say you can empower other community members who have similar concerns to come forward. It can also alert people working in both government and non-government agencies that there is a need to address issues associated with drunkenness in the community and that there is local community support to do so. Agencies may be able to provide assistance and can often introduce other strategies that can enhance the efforts of those working in the community.
Individuals
As each community is different, the nature and extent of problems that individuals experience in relation to alcohol will differ. From noise or littering to property damage and adolescents and alcohol, there are common issues that people within communities may experience and want to address by taking action.
As an individual you can:
- Ensure substantial food is served where alcohol is available
- If you have concerns, write a letter and suggest measures for action
- Be a good role model to friends, family and children
- Complain about inapropriate alcohol advertising
- Establish an alcohol policy at work
- provide education to individuals and groups
