What can be done about littering in public areas?
If the littering of empty alcohol bottles, cans and broken glass is a problem in your community you may wish to consider taking the following steps to resolve the issue.
Step 1:
As a community minded citizen you can become part of the Littering Report Scheme. Keep Australia Beautiful has a scheme in which you can participate by reporting instances of littering from motor vehicles. Contact Keep Australia Beautiful for further information.
Step 2:
Notify your local government. They are responsible for keeping public areas free of rubbish and litter.
If you believe that one or more licensed venues are contributing to the littering of alcohol bottles, cans and broken glass in your community, you can do the following:
Step 3:
Approach the Licensees or Approved Manager. Usually they are willing to discuss your concerns, to maintain good community relations and avoid complaints, which could lead to fines or conditions being imposed upon their licences. Make a written note of all conversations should you need it for future reference.
If your attempts to solve the problem with the licensed venue are unsuccessful you have a number of options available to you.
Step 4:
Contact the Department of Racing, Gaming and Liquor. They will be able to provide further information on how to address littering involving a licensed premise.
