Healthway (formerly the Western Australian Health Promotion Foundation) was established in 1991, and provides grants to health and research organisations, as well as sponsorships to sport, arts, racing and community groups which encourage healthy lifestyles and advance health promotion programs. Healthway’s mission is to improve the health of West Australians by promoting and facilitating healthier lifestyles, policies and environments and empowering individuals, groups and communities to be healthier. To find out more about Healthway and if you’re eligible to apply for a health promotion project grant, go to www.healthway.wa.gov.au.
Applications will be assessed on a range of criteria, including:
- The project’s ability to reach Healthway's priority target groups (ie. children, youth, Indigenous people, rural and remote communities and low socioeconomic groups);
- The health promotion returns offered by the project;
- The number of people participating in activities and the project’s capacity to attract new participants;
- The sustainability of the project and whether long term participation is a likely outcome;
- Whether the project is new, innovative or seeks to expand or improve an existing program or event;
- The extent to which the requested sponsorship is realistically related to the potential health promotion impact or benefit of the project
Role of the Sponsorship Officer at the Drug and Alcohol Office
In return for sponsorship, organisations are required to commit to actively promote a health message alongside the sponsored project, such as Alcohol.Think Again.
The Sponsorship Officer at the Drug and Alcohol Office can assist you with such matters as questions relating to funding eligibility, assessing if the
Alcohol.Think Again message would be suitable for your project and writing your application. If your application is successful, sponsorship recipients will be assisted in promoting the health message and achieving healthy environmental changes, the evaluation process and general ongoing support. It is important to note however, that Healthway make the final decision as to whether a project receives funding.
PLEASE NOTE: APPLICATIONS FOR FUNDING THAT ARE RECEIVED LESS THAN 3 CALENDAR MONTHS PRIOR TO THE EVENT WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.
Strategies to promote the health message include environmental changes eg. providing non-alcoholic and low-alcohol drinks at a lower price than full strength drinks, discouraging excessive or rapid consumption of alcohol and serving drinks in the standard drink serve only, signage, clothing and other merchandise, verbal and written acknowledgements, and information provision.
Examples of Alcohol.Think Again sponsorships
1. RTRFM Fresh Blast Project
The RTRFM Fresh Blast Project gives local bands and musicians the opportunity to effectively promote their CD launches to local audiences while also promoting the Alcohol.Think Again message and encouraging healthy lifestyles and environments. This project is a good example of a successful, ongoing project sponsored by Healthway.
2. South Pacific Festival at Meve
The South Pacific Festival at Meve was hosted by the Lions Club of Jandakot Lakes, and comprised of a one-day festival that featured performances by Pacific Island and New Zealand groups, traditional food, and art and craft stalls. This was the first Alcohol.Think Again event conducted.
